My undergraduate degree is from Brown University and my MBA is in Finance from New York University’s Stern Graduate School of Business, from which I graduated in the Beta Gamma Sigma academic honor society.
Experience
As a long time professor of finance, I developed a particular strength in teaching precisely the topics which commonly trip up students. Semester after semester, year after year, those specific topics never much differed. For that matter, the reason for students’ misunderstanding of those specific topics never much differed either. As a result, I developed alternative ways of teaching that material when the “usual” way proved ineffective for some students. I also have all the resources that are made available to professors by textbook publishers and other education providers, and I know how they are used to create exams, homework assignments and lecture slides. (You might be surprised how much of academic preparation is actually done for professors by textbook publishers in order to persuade professors to assign their textbooks.) I am currently retired from the faculty of Finance at the University of Maryland, where I was a three-time winner of the Distinguished Teaching Award. I have also held faculty positions as Professorial Lecturer at Georgetown University and Practitioner Instructor at Johns Hopkins University, both teaching at the graduate level. I received my Chartered Financial Analyst designation in 1995 and have served multiple times as a CFA Level 3 examination grader. Just prior to entering the professoriate, I served as the nation’s first Financial Markets Expert-in-Residence in the United States Department of Labor. Before that, I was an institutional investor with over twenty years of professional work experience domestically and internationally. I was an expert faculty reviewer for “Applied Corporate Finance” by Aswath Damodaran (John Wiley, 2010) and “Essentials of Investments” by Bodie, Kane and Marcus (McGraw-Hill, 2012). I’m new to this platform but I can lead you to understand the material just as I did for over three thousand previous university students!
